LESSON 19: TENSES-INTRODUCTION

What does a tense mean?

A TENSE is a form of changing a verb and its auxiliary verb in accordance with the difference of time of action of a sentence, which are probably 14 in number. Ultimately we can divide time into three dimension, such as PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE. Any action that happened in the past, happens now, or will happen in the future. These three dimensions of an action can be represented using 14 types of tenses in English language. They are:

SIMPLE TENSES:

1. SIMPLE PAST
3. SIMPLE PRESENT
5. SIMPLE FUTURE

PAST AND PRESENT:
1. PAST TENSE
2. PRESENT TENSE

CONTINUOUS TENSES:

1. PAST CONTINUOUS
2. PRESENT CONTINOUS
3. FUTURE CONTINOUS

PERFECT TENSES:

1. PAST PERFECT
2. PRESENT PERFECT
3. FUTURE PERFECT

PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSES:

1. PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS
2. PRESENT PERFECT CONTINOUS
3. FUTURE PERFECT CONTINUOUS

From the above classification, we can come to a conclusion that according to the dimension of timing usage in a sentence, we can bring all the sentences within three time dimensions that is PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE. Each dimension of PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE has three branches in it, and also two included in these are PAST TENSE and PRESENT TENSE.

PAST TENSE: Any action happened in the past can be notified using past tense. Past sentence is divided into five branches such as PAST, SIMPLE PAST, PAST CONTINUOUS, PAST PERFECT and PAST PERFECT CONTINOUS

PRESENT TENSE: Any action happens in the present can be notified using present tense. Present sentence is divided into five branches such as PRESENT, SIMPLE PRESENT, PRESENT CONTINUOUS, PRESENT PERFECT, and PRESENT PERFECT CONTINOUS.

Any action will happen in the future can be notified using future tense. Future sentence is divided into four branches such as FUTURE, FUTURE CONTINUOUS, FUTURE PERFECT, and FUTURE PERFECT CONTINOUS

Now we will see all 14 tenses one by one.

Next lesson will describe PRESENT TENSE. Okay.
